Dr Yeo Lay Hwee, Director of the EU Centre contributed an article on “ASEAN’s Cooperation with the European Union – ASEM and Beyond” to the Special Issue of Panorama, a journal published by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS). This Special Issue “ASEAN at 50 – A look at its External Relations” is now available online.
In her article, Dr Yeo argued that there are good reasons for the EU and ASEAN to engage in a partnership with a strategic purpose. Converging interests between the EU and ASEAN in keeping economic nationalism and protectionism in check, in managing the complexities and volatilities arising from strategic competition between the US and China and other non-traditional security threats meant that they need to work hard to turn their strategic intent to pragmatic cooperation.
