EU-ASEAN Security Cooperation-book-500x334

This article traces the evolution of EU-ASEAN relations and examines the real extent of their cooperation in the security arena. It considers the lack of follow-up after the very first relatively successful European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) mission in Southeast Asia, the Aceh Monitoring Mission (AMM) and questions whether this kind of security involvement in ASEAN can be sustained in the midst of a series of security challenges that the EU currently faces in its own backyard. The article also suggests how EU-ASEAN security cooperation should continue to be focused on non-traditional, soft security issues that are in the EU’s interests, and argues that a comprehensive EU-ASEAN partnership that emphasizes capacity building and investments in all the three pillars of the ASEAN Community would be mutually beneficial. A strong, cohesive ASEAN is important for peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region consistent with the EU preferences.
