Summer Programme 2019 – Singapore and Maastricht

The European Union (EU) Centre in Singapore, together with its partner universities – Universitas Indonesia (UI), University of Malaya (UM) and Maastricht University (MU) successfully organised the 2019 Summer Programme. The programme, in its third iteration, was one of the key activities of the Jean Monnet Network that focuses on research, dialogue and outreach under the banner “Challenges to Multiculturalism and Multilateralism in Southeast Asia and Europe”. The theme of this year’s 2-week Summer programme was: “How ASEAN and the EU confront challenges to security and prosperity”. Our participants, selected from over 200 applications, spent a week in Singapore (15 – 22 June) followed by a week in Maastricht, Netherlands (23 – 29 June). We had a diverse group of 25 student participants hailing from 14 different countries across Southeast Asia and Europe.

This year, the summer programme commenced a day earlier in Singapore to give our participants more time to get to know each other and take part in a city tour to explore the sights and sounds of Singapore. The EU Centre worked with Sneakpeek Singapore for a walking city tour around key spots such as the Singapore River, Kreta Ayer, Telok Ayer and Ann Siang.

In the first leg of the summer programme in Singapore, our participants attended lectures in University Town (UTown) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). The lectures provided a broad overview of ASEAN; its various cooperation frameworks, fundamental principles and functions, and examined facets of the ASEAN Economic, Political-Security and Socio-cultural communities. The lectures also looked into ASEAN’s relations with the EU, US and China.

Highlight for the Singapore programme includes:

  1. Dinner Dialogue with Singapore’s Ambassador-at-Large Ong Keng Yong (Secretary-General of ASEAN from 2003-2008)
  2. Visit to the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), hosted by Executive Director Ambassador Karsten Warnecke
  3. Visit to the iconic Gardens by the Bay, and sampled local delicacies
  4. Opportunity to attend the inaugural International Conference on Cohesive Societies (ICCS)

The lectures in Maastricht, hosted by the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, Maastricht University, provide a broad overview of the EU and its many institutions, along with a brief look into its history to provide the context for the pursuit of European integration.

Highlight for the Maastricht programme includes:

  1. City tour of Maastricht and a visit to the iconic St. Peter’s Caves
  2. Mid-week day trip to Brussels, Belgium – Visit to the EU Parliament, Parlamentarium and the Hemicycle as well as the House of European History
  3. Visit to the Provincial Government Office of Limburg where the Maastricht Treaty (Treaty of the European Union) was signed and see a copy of the historic Treaty
  4. Dialogue with the Ambassador of Indonesia to the Netherlands H.E. I Gusti Agung Waseka Puja

The summer programme drew to a close with an official closing ceremony and presentation of certificates to all participants by director of the EU Centre in Singapore, Dr Yeo Lay Hwee and fellow network partners Dr Evi Fitriani (Universitas Indonesia), Dr Rahul Mishra (University of Malaya) and Dr Johan Adriaensen (University of Maastricht). The Dean of the Faculty, Dr Sophie Vanhoonacker, also joined the students on the last day for a photo and farewell drinks.

On behalf of the EU Centre in Singapore, we would like to thank and congratulate our partner universities for the wonderful collaboration in delivering on three interesting and highly educational Summer programmes from 2017 to 2019. Special thanks to Prof Thomas Christiansen, Dr Johan Adriaensen, Cecile Luijten and Marika Peressoni from Maastricht University, and Valerie Tan and Jasmine Khin from the EU Centre for their efforts and assistance in ensuring the smooth running of the 2019 Summer programme in Singapore and Maastricht.

We would also like to thank all our participants for wholeheartedly engaging in the discussions and opportunities provided to learn more about the EU and ASEAN and their partnership.
